Children Class Size and Content

Instructional Goals

In order to teach children effectively, class size is limited to a maximum of 15 students depending on COVID 2 meter spacing. This enables the Instructors (at least 2) to engage in personalized interaction with each student. Because of the age range of 6 to 12 , each student has a need for individualized instruction as each student will have optimum development.

A narrow view of Karate as portrayed in the movies and television as "just fighting", is an uphill battle of the contrary. Karate, with properly taught ethics, is a way to developing one's character. To have courage to overcome various negative feelings such as being a victim or being intimidated. Children are taught traditional karate do values which embodies respect for one another, courtesy, discipline, perseverance, and patience.  As well, the karate techniques of  balance, strength, and coordination. Our program fosters leadership skills in children. By providing a  supportive and positive peer group. The young student is more resistant to negative peer pressure such as intimidation, bullying, and online victimizing.

Self-Defense

Firstly, the children are taught how to move their bodies and maneuver with footwork. Towards the end of the 3 month session, they are taught basic self-defense against grabs, pushes and tripping as well as defense against strikes punches and kicks.

Why Join Us

Master Instructors Evolve and Hone their Skills and Wisdom over many Decades

The Pursuit of Technical Perfection is the Path to Individual expression of one's Truth and Authenticity, Freedom, and Creativity.

A beginner student would immediately benefit from a master instructor's knowledge. Even though some students may pursue karate for a short while, they will have an understanding and benefit of the subtleties of basic techniques and movements to enhance their coordination and balance of both mind and body in other activities they may pursue.

It's one thing to be shown how to perform basic karate techniques but another thing to perform them with excellence in the context of balance, speed, leverage and precision. There are subtle details and pitfalls that make the difference between so-so techniques and highly effective and effortless one. This is due to evolved and advanced knowledge of techniques over five decades of training by Chief Instructor Montgomery.

A master Instructor has the wisdom to guide a beginner student through effective basics and avoid developing so-so techniques in the new student. The pitfall is, that once a student learns basic techniques without a master's guidance, then it becomes difficult to undue. As the student progresses, the same so-so practice  goes into more advance techniques and then the execution of so called expert level (1st level black belt) becomes somewhat unrefined in execution.

Some of aspects of so-so looking techniques are as follows:

  • There's a lack of understanding of posture alignment which reflect as out-of-balance movements.

  • There is a unawareness of proper sequence within the movement that makes the movement appear  labored.

  • Too many body parts are in motion. In some cases, the body parts are counter to the direction of movement. A more advanced technique will appear effortless, smooth and quick -like with apparent power.

  • Telegraphic signals from various body locations such as the LIFTING OF SHOULDERS on punching, blocking and kicking techniques. These kinds of telegraphic motions not only gives away intention but also slows up execution and weakens the very technique being used. This is a good test to check  to see how advanced a black belt is in their training.

  • The "loading up" of technique such as a kick, punch or block is not only telegraphic and creates unnecessary tension but can easily be intercepted by a skillful opponent. This "muscling" a technique could lead to quick exhaustion.

  • That speed of technique has a " hurried " look to the execution and not all necessary body parts  are involved. Such as, a punch or block using arm only or a kick with leg only. This even with a shifting of footwork, the technique still looks disconnected. Speed of technique should appear explosive and instantaneous.

As the famous  Bruce Lee said, "It's not how fast your are but how soon you get there that counts". To a master instructor, this statement speaks volumes.

INTEGRITY and PERSONAL POWER

OUR VALUES

  • Have Integrity when you speak and follow through with your word.

  • Be Authentic and Sincere.

  • Be Responsible for your Behavior and Actions. Validating or blaming gives your power away.

  • Enrich others through your thoughts, words and deeds.

Traditional Karate Dojo Kuns

1. Be courteous in your manners.

2. Have a strong sense of Justice.

3. Be responsible for your words and action

4. Be respectful to one another.

5. Karate is the way of spirit to give you courage and ambition to achieve your goals as a part of your life.
